Grapefruit Diet
September 9th, 2007
…„THE Queen of Pop Kylie Minogue is helping thousands of women achieve a perfectly shaped body before their holidays by revealing her winning diet plan.
The star swears by her seven-day grapefruit diet to shift flabby flesh and uses it in the run-up to a big gig or before going on holiday.
Kylie has described the fat-burning power of the grapefruit as her “secret weapon” when it comes to keeping in shape.
The grapefruit is one of the few negative calorie foods and if you follow the diet religiously you can drop half a stone in a week, just in time for your trip to the sun.
The key to this diet is you have to eat until you are stuffed, so long as you stick to the foods on the meal plan.
The more you eat the more weight you will lose. However, the Grapefruit Diet is not advised as a long-term healthy eating plan.
WHAT IS THE DIET PLAN?
Within two-and-a-half months you can lose 52lbs. Stay on the diet for 12 days, then stop for two days and repeat.
If it’s good enough for the best bum in the world, it’s good enough for the rest of us.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The combination of fat-burning enzymes and low carbohydrate content in grapefruit means the body produces less glucose and stops creating fatty tissue.
WHAT ARE THE PORTIONS LIKE?
Much to the delight of women everywhere you can wave goodbye to counting calories. On this diet you can eat as much of the foods listed as you want.
They do not contain carbohydrates, so as long as you stick to the high protein foods on the list, you’re sure to lose weight.
WHAT ARE THE RULES?
Eat half a grapefruit with your breakfast, lunch and dinner.
You can have as much meat, fish, vegetables and salad as you like. Make sure you feel full after each meal.
You can fry meat in butter or oil. Drink eight glasses of water a day.
Have a maximum of one cup of tea or coffee a day but no biscuits.
Do not drink alcohol or fizzy products.
And end every day with an 8oz glass of tomato juice or skimmed milk.
WHAT DO THE EXPERTS THINK?
Dietician Margot Brennan, public relations officer for the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI), said most of the so-called Hollywood diets are what they would term crash diets.
She added: “It has not yet been proven that grapefruits have any magical fat-burning powers.
“This diet is low in carbohydrates and for that reason rapid weight loss is possible.
“As a quick fix solution it may work, but it certainly does not address the issue of long-term healthy eating.
“The best and safest way to lose weight and keep it off is to consult a dietician.
“A dietician will discuss a suitable programme with you, keeping your diet and lifestyle in mind.
“The biggest problem in Ireland with regards dieticians is there are no common guidelines.
“Anyone can come out and call themselves a dietician but the INDI represents qualified dieticians working in Ireland.
“It is very important that you are certain and check that the person you consult has the correct certification.”
Judith Wills, author of The Diet Bible, said low-carbohydrate diets shouldn’t be followed long term.
She added: “These diets are high in fat and low in fibre, which increases the risk of heart disease and could cause damage to the kidneys.
“However, a couple of weeks on this type of diet is unlikely to harm you.”
THE GRAPEFRUIT
Researchers at the Florida Citrus Department in the US are currently carrying out a study to prove that grapefruits contain an enzyme which helps the metabolic process - including the breakdown of fat.
Doctors in the UK have already dubbed the grapefruit a “superfood” because of the high dose of antioxidants and vitamin C it contains.
And because it’s a negative calorie food, the energy burnt off by eating a grapefruit is greater than the calories it contains.
DAILY MENU
You cannot eliminate anything from the diet, these combinations of food burn the fat.
And remember, the grapefruit is the catalyst that starts the process. So get eating and look forward to your days making a splash on the beach.
